Accident Checklist

The moments following an accident can be confusing and overbearing.  It's easy to overlook important details that may be crucial to your claim.  Below is a helpful checklist of information to collect immediately after an accident:

  1. If the immediate scene and area is safe, take photos of the crash scene and any damages to your personal property.  Then, if possible, move yourself and your motorcycle to the side of the road.
  2. Call 911 immediately and request emergency services if you or anyone else needs medical attention.
  3. Request the local law enforcement department to come to the scene of the accident and prepare a report.
  4. Gather evidence of the accident.  This includes: a) taking pictures of the scene and any property damage to vehicles involved in the accident, b) writing notes about the accident and how it occurred, c) getting a copy of the police report.
  5. Speak with an attorney experienced in personal injury law to assist you in handling the claim.

Safe Riding Tips

Motorcycles are the most vulnerable vehicles on the road due their small size and the lack of safety equipment such as seat belts and airbags.  Motorcyclists can easily be thrown from their vehicles in a crash which can result in serious injuries.  Here are some helpful tips to stay safe:

  1. Do not linger in blind spots.  All vehicles have blind spots.  The larger the vehicle typically results in a larger blind spot.  Semi tractors with trailers have large blind spot zones on both sides of their vehicles and should be avoided as often as possible.
  2. Conduct safety checks of your motorcycle and gear.  You should always ride with protective clothing such as an approved helmet, jacket, boots and gloves.  Properly using and maintaining your riding gear may reduce the severity of your injuries if you are involved in an accident.  Before heading out on your motorcycle, check your headlight, stop light and turn signal indicators.  Also, make sure the tread and pressure of your tires are adequate.
  3. Drive Defensively!  Many collisions are caused due to other drivers not noticing you on the road.  Always be aware of your surroundings and erratic driving by other motorists.  Never ride between traffic lanes and obey all traffic laws.  When able, wear bright clothing which will make you stand out in traffic so that you are visible on the road.
